Acid attack suspect to reappear before the Mokopane Regional Court

Yvonne Maja (25), accused of attempted murder following an attack on Mmapeu Hlanga(27), whom she allegedly doused with acid during October 2024 in Mogoto Village, Zebediela, will reappear before the Mokopane Regional Court on 21 July.

According to Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the case was initially reported as assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Ledwaba said the matter was formally reported to the police during January 2025, three months after the incident. The tragedy occurred at the residence of Hlanga’s boyfriend in the same village over a romantic dispute.

Hlanga suffered severe injuries to her face and parts of her body following the senseless attack. She was admitted to Mankweng Hospital for medical attention, including skin graft.

Ledwaba stated that Maja was arrested on 14 February following investigations and initially appeared before the Zebediela Periodical Court on 15 February.

She was granted R3000 bail and the case was referred to Mokopane Regional Court for further proceedings. Maja made her first appearance before the Mokopane Regional Court on 1 July.

Limpopo MEC for Health, Dieketseng Mashego visited Hlanga at her residence in Zebediela on 8 July and expressed deep compassion as well as commitment to support her on her journey to recovery.

Mashego expressed, “We stand with her during this challenging journey as she works towards her healing and strength, and commend her for her boldness and speaking up.”

Hlanga thanked the Limpopo Department of Health, through Mankweng Hospital, for the work the institution has done on her so far.

She further praised the clinical psychologist who walked with her through the journey to help her relate the incident without fear of breaking down.
