The South African National Civic Organization (SANCO) in Sekhukhune region, together with members of the community of Ngwaabe Village, Ga-Malekane staged a protest action outside the Sekhukhune Magistrate’s Court seeking the denial of bail for a 34 year-old Somali national accused of kidnapping and rape of a five year-old girl.

In a press release, the organization, led by regional chairperson, Morwamakoti Morwamakoti, said they were at the court in solidarity with the victim, her family and the broader community, reaffirming SANCO’s unwavering stance against gender-based violence (GBV) and the abuse of vulnerable persons in the society.

“SANCO expresses deep concern over the continued delays in justice and calls on the justice system to ensure that the matter is treated with the urgency and seriousness it demands. SANCO will continue to monitor the case closely and be present at the next court appearances to ensure that justice is not only pursued but also be seen to be done,” the statement read.

Morwamakoti said they cannot allow their communities to live in fear or their children to be victims without consequences.

“We demand accountability through lawful means,” expressed Morwamakoti. He added that the organization remains committed to working with law enforcement, the justice system and the community to create a safer and just society for all – especially for our children and women who face daily threats of violence.

The protest took place on 5 September when the suspect reappeared before the court. He made his first appearance on 2 September following his arrest.

It is alleged that the crime occurred on 31 August when the girl visited the suspect’s shop to buy some snacks.

The matter was postponed to 12 September for formal bail application. The suspect cannot be named to protect the minor victim against secondary victimisation.
