President Cyril Ramaphosa could soon face impeachment proceedings over the Phala-Phala scandal after initially fending them off when a parliamentary majority ruled to suppress a report of a committee set up by lawmakers and chaired by former Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo.

On Friday 08 May 2026 the Constitutional Court, following months long delay, ruled the parliamentary vote invalid and set it aside, paving the way for MPs to institute impeachment proceedings against the President.
The theft of money in the form of American dollars at his farm in Limpopo led to allegations that he had not accounted for where the cash had come from. The president denied wrongdoing.
But impeachment proceedings were blocked four years ago in a parliamentary vote. At that time Ramaphosa’s African National Congress (ANC) had a majority in parliament, but since the 2024 general election the ANC has been governing in a coalition.

Ramaphosa’s office cautiously acknowledged the judgment in a statement.

“The Presidency has noted the judgment of the Constitutional Court in the case brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters challenging the National Assembly’s decision with respect to Section 89 proceedings against the President,” said the presidency in a short statement.

The scandal involves the theft of at least $580K – hidden inside a couch at Cyril Ramaphosa’s private Limpopo game farm in Feb 2020.

A farm employee said he hid the cash under couch cushions for ‘safekeeping’.
Speaking to reporters outside the court in Braamfontein, Johannesburg EFF Leader Julius Malema said Ramaphosa should resign and “concentrate on this impeachment process because it has got serious implications on him as an individual”.
“You cannot serve the two – one is going to suffer,” he explained, referring to being president and preparing for impeachment,” said Malema who’s party the matter to court alongside the African Transformation Movement in 2024.

Malema said ANC members will have to impeach Ramaphosa because “the evidence will be before their eyes”.

The DA acknowledged the ruling in vague statements by both newly elected Federal Leader Geordin Hill-Lewis and spokespersonKarabo Khakhau.

” The DA and it’s public representatives will uphold the rule of law”, said Hill-Lewis.

The DA, formerly the main opposition but now main partner of the ANC in the Government of National Unity had previously said it would protect Ramaphosa in the event of impeachment proceedings.
