Retailer endorses stockvel as an important community pillar.
Large retailer eyes stockvels ( social clubs ) as important structures for community uplifment.
Spar announced this week that it was to participate in Saturday’s Polokwane Stockvel Talk as part of commitment to communities.
The company said in a statement that with the prevailing economic difficulties, stockvels are an important structure that help community navigate the decline including securing daily consumables while planning for the future.
“ Stockvels remain one of the country’s most trusted and resilient community support systems that are helping families manage grocery costs, school expenses, healthcare needs and other household priorities through collective saving,”said Spar ahead of the event.
“At a time when consumers continue to feel the pressure of rising living costs, many South Africans are relying more heavily on community-led saving structures to help stretch household budgets and create financial stability,” said the company.
Stockvels are particularly prevalent in black residential areas where individuals, families and even communities use to raise resources as well as to save for among others daily needs and future events that may be costly.
“Stockvels continue to play a critical role in helping communities pool resources, share knowledge and support one another through difficult economic conditions,” Spar said.
Benefits of a Stockvel may include grocery allocation and cash payout.
Spar said it viewed the Stockvel Talk event was an ideal platform for promoting its menstrual hygiene initiative. Often, girls as well as children in rural areas and townships often struggle with menstrual hygiene due to a lack of resources.
“As part of its participation, SPAR will also use the platform to highlight menstrual hygiene awareness in support of its broader End Period Poverty campaign on Menstrual Hygiene Day,”Spar said.
The company said the menstrual hygiene campaign is part of a broader contribution to discourse dignity and community wellbeing.
“Period poverty continues to affect millions of girls and women across South Africa, with many households already under pressure from rising food, transport and utility costs,” said Spar.
For SPAR, said the company, the focus remains on using trusted community spaces to engage meaningfully on issues that matter to consumers while continuing to support conversations around savings, affordability and collective resilience.
“Period poverty is not just a health issue, it is also a dignity issue. For many young girls and women, inconsistent access to menstrual hygiene products affects confidence, education and participation in daily life. At SPAR, we believe it is important to use trusted community spaces to help drive awareness and encourage meaningful conversations,” the company quotes its Mpudi Maubane its National PR, Communications & Sponsorships Manager at SPAR.
“Conversations around affordability and community support are deeply connected to the realities individuals face every day. Our participation in the Polokwane Stockvel Talk is about contributing to conversations that matter to communities and supporting dignity-driven initiatives such as End Period Poverty,” she said.
The company said it believes platforms such as Stockvel Talks provide important opportunities for communities in economic distress to have meaningful engagements on survival as well sustainability.
SPAR’s participation at the Polokwane Stockvel Talk reflects the retailer’s broader commitment to supporting the communities it serves, not only through affordability initiatives, but also by helping shine a spotlight on important societal issues affecting women and young girls.
By bringing conversations around menstrual dignity into trusted community spaces, SPAR hopes to encourage greater awareness, open dialogue and support-driven action that can create meaningful impact.
