The March and March campaign targeting undocumented foreign nationals working at farms in the Leeuwfontein area on September 11 resulted in the hospitalisation of the movement’s leader in Sekhukhune District, Simon Kgagara.
The recent raid targeted four farms in the area which are allegedly using the services of undocumented foreign nationals.
Kgagara said the operation involved the police and immigration officers. The leader expressed disappointment over farmers who continue to employ undocumented foreign nationals. He alleges the farmers protect and hide the undocumented foreign nationals in their farms during operations.
According to Kgagara, the operation resulted in the apprehension of 80 undocumented foreign nationals.
“As we were chasing after one of the foreign nationals, I was engaged in a squabble with him and I fell to the ground after he pushed me. That is how I got injured. What worries me is that he managed to run into one of the farms and the farmer tried to protect him and give him refuge at his farm. However, we engaged the police and he was subsequently arrested for being in the country illegally. We are facing a serious challenge with the farmers in our area,” Kgagara said.
Kgagara committed that the raids will continue. “We have over 800 farms within Ephraim Mogale and Elias Motsoaledi local municipalities and we are planning on visiting all of them. We cannot be deterred by the actions of some of the farmers,” Kgagara said.
Kgagara is still recovering from the injuries he sustained on his arm and abdomen during the operation.
He was admitted at the Glen Cowie Hospital on September 12 morning after his pains started getting serious. The leader was discharged from the hospital that afternoon.
