The Fetakgomo-Tubatse Municipality Council wrapped up its term of office with the adaption two critical reports, that were tabled, considered and approved unanimously.
The Council sitting, convened this week, marks the end of the road for the Council and individual councilors with the next local government elections set for Wednesday 04 November 2026.
The Audit Committee and Municipal Public Accounts Committee detailed the performance of the Municipality in the 1st quarter of the 2026/2027 financial year while other municipal departments also had their respective reports approved in a move widely seen as signaling governance stability in the municipality.
This week’s meeting also saw political parties thanking the electorate for having given them a chance to serve in council over the past 5 years. This after Council Speaker Makgalema Shoba gave them a chance to bid farewell to communities.
Fetakgomo-Tubatse Local Municipality is seen as crucial in broader efforts to industrialise the Greater Sekhukhune District with a process already underway to establish a Special Economic Zone in the municipality which is earmarked to create thousands of jobs and economic opportunities.
The local government sphere has experienced a lot of instability with Fetakgomo-Tubatse and other municipalities in Sekhukhune being among those that have been fairly stable which enables them to deliver services without interruption and Mayor Ngwakwana Mphethi congratulated all Councillors for what she called their selfless service and dedication to the community of Fetakgomo Tubatse
“As we close this chapter, we must be proud of the legacy this Council is leaving behind. We have laid a solid foundation for the new Council coming post the Local Government elections and our expectations is for them to raise the bar in terms of development of our communities,” said the mayor.
Mphethi said the upcoming elections should be seen as healthy competition that forms part of South Africa’s democracy and not necessarily a do or die affair.
“We wish all the political parties serving in Council all the best in the forthcoming elections and wish for free and peaceful elections where sanity should prevail in our communities. Our communities deserve better and we have the capacity to do so” said Mayor Mphethi.
