Great North Transport (GNT) buses in Sekhukhune District are back on their routes following a protracted dispute with taxi associations.

The company had temporarily stopped its operations following alleged threats against bus drivers and blockages of routes.
The disruptions occurred shortly after GNT introduced new buses in the Jane Furse area as part of its programme to improve public transport in Limpopo.
Commuters dependent on public transport remained the hardest hit for a period of over a week as the company and the Sekhukhune Affected Taxi Associations engaged in a series of meetings to find a solution over the speedy implementation of the long-awaited 30% relief fund for taxi owners.
The constructive engagements between GNT and the taxi associations resulted in a resolution earlier this week.
GNT spokesperson Leo Gama confirmed the resumption of operations on October 30. “GNT welcomes the outcome of these engagements and remains committed to maintaining positive relations with other public transport operators in the interest of commuters and the broader community. The resumption of services will restore access to public transport for affected passengers, enabling them to travel to work, school and other essential destinations,” Gama said.
Sekhukhune Affected Taxi Associations co-ordinator Leonard Magaela said they are happy that the company gave the taxi associations four buses on a lease for period of two months.
He highlighted the taxi associations are currently preparing documents for an advertised contract in the company.
“We are happy to have reached a resolution on the matter. We are also pleased to have been given the four buses on a lease. The initial agreement was that we will be given seven buses, however, following deliberations, four was agreed upon,” Magaela said.
