Disability sports in Limpopo’s Mopani district received a major boost with the donation of a state of the art multipurpose tennis court by superstar Kgothatso KG Montjane.
The facility was expected to be handed over to Letaba Special School in Tzaneen on Friday during a high profile event attended by among others Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton Mckenzie and the provincial MEC for the portfolio Jerry Maseko among others.
Montjane, herself a disabled tennis player expressed hopes that the facility will create a starting point for the careers of many less fortunate youth.
“This court is more than just a facility, it’s a launchpad for dreams,” said Montjane of its significance.
The gesture of goodwill by Montjane is also seen as highly inspiring by authorities as it comes during women’s month, an important period on the national calendar as the country battles the scourge of gender based violence as well as historical marginalisation of women.
As an athlete living with disability, Montjane herself had to endure endless hurdles and made it against all odds. Through the gift she’s hoping to make it a little easier for other youngsters who find themselves in similar unfavourable circumstances.
“Growing up, I faced many challenges accessing proper training grounds. Today, I’m honored to provide these young athletes with the tools to thrive,” said the star player.
The 39 year old is the first black South African woman to win at the famous Wimbledon when she scooped the wheelchair women’s doubles after eliminating top contenders from across the world in 2024.
