Fourth Quarter Crime Statistics show decline in murder cases

Limpopo has recorded a 26% year-on-year decrease in murder cases, positioning the province as the safest in terms of reported murders.

This was revealed during the release of the Fourth Quarter Crime Statistics for the 2024/2025 financial period in Polokwane on May 28.

The figures indicate that 27 out of the 179 murders reported were linked to mob justice, predominantly in Seshego, Thohoyandou, Lebowakgomo and Westernberg.

Attempted murder dropped by 11%, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm is down by 16%, common robbery declined by 8.2%, aggravated robbery reduced by 20.2% while carjackings fell to 42 reported cases.

Five-hundred and eighty-nine arrests were made by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences units and eight individuals sentenced to life imprisonment, with 29 offenders receiving a combined total of 252 years imprisonment for various sexual offences.

A total of 120 suspects were arrested for murder, 1713 for assault GBH, 1678 apprehended for drug-related crimes, 5092 for contravention of the immigration laws and 224 nabbed for rape.

Police confiscated 350 illegal firearms, recovered 80 stolen or hijacked vehicles and seized 459 knives as well as 27 pangas.

Dagga estimated at a street value of R15 million was recovered in the Waterberg district and counterfeit goods and illicit cigarettes exceeding R6.6 million were seized.

The Provincial Commissioner of South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe said the statistics are more than just numbers but a reflection of lives saved, communities protected and justice delivered.

Hadebe expressed, “We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure safety, peace and stability in every corner of Limpopo.”

Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye highlighted that the partnership between SAPS and communities is yielding tangible results. “As Limpopo continues in this path, the prospects for a brighter and safer future look promising. This province is poised to become a model for effective crime prevention and community safety initiatives,” stated Mathye.
