The ANC in Limpopo has once again demonstrated maturity and stability by averting a potentially explosive leadership contest when it held a successful elective conference.
In line with a unity pack brokered by regional leaders, Phophi Ramathuba was elected unopposed as the provincial chairperson while John Mpe, the Polokwane Mayor who was initially running against the Premier was elected as her deputy.
The rest of the elected Provincial Executive Committee officials are:
Provincial Secretary- Ruben Madadzhe-Vhembe region
Deputy Provincial Secretary – Pule Shai- Mopani region
Provincial Treasurer Eddie Maila-Sekhukhune region
The display of unity by Limpopo branches come as ANC structures elsewhere in the country are at each other’s throats over leadership positions.
The Eastern Cape was scheduled to hold an elective conference since Friday but a last-minute court bid resulted in the meeting interdicted. Supporters of Provincial Secretary Lulama Ngcukaitobi brought the court action accusing a faction led by the provincial chairperson Oscar Mabuyane of rigging branch general meetings to gain the upper hand ahead of the conference.
In Gauteng’s Johannesburg Region, the faction of Executive Mayor Dada Morero remains engaged in a court bid to have the election of Loyiso Masuku as regional chairperson.
Ramathuba said among her priorities will be to grow the mineral rich province’s economy to create much needed job. Ramathuba has, in her position as Premier, spearheaded the establishment of Special Economic Zones including in Fetakgomo-Tubatse municipality which are expected to create tens of thousands jobs.
She has also vowed the province’s most urbanised municipality, Polokwane, becomes a metropolitan, a move that may come with significant infrastructure rollout.
