The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality (EMLM) has ventilated concerns over the poor state of the Monsterlus Stadium, claiming that R11 million was channelled towards the facility’s upgrading project, which is yet to start.
According to the DA, there is no evidence of the upgrades at the facility, as listed in the scope of work of the project.
DA Councillor Sipho Mmaboko said they want Reginah Mahlakwane, EMLM Municipal Manager, to investigate the alleged mismanagement of funds of the project and address the dire state of the facility.
“During our oversight inspection of the stadium, we found no evidence of the upgrades or refurbishment. The pitch is non-functional, there are collapsed walls and fences, vandalised infrastructure and the toilets and other facilities have fallen into a state of disrepair. Elias Motsoaledi has wasted R11m on these supposed upgrades but the sports facility remains in dire state,” Mmaboko said.
Mmaboko said the scope of the work of the project included the installation of high mast lights, equipping boreholes, construction of sports field layers, planting of the field lawn and taxi pick-up and drop-off area.
“It is unacceptable that a stadium that has the potential to boost local economic activity, generate revenue for the municipality, host soccer matches, be a hub for grassroots sports, host athletic events as well as community gatherings, has been neglected and left in a state of disrepair. In fact, the poor state of the stadium has seen it fail to comply with PSL standards and attract teams like Sekhukhune United to host their home matches there. The condition of this stadium should be addressed,” Mmaboko said.
The municipality had not responded to the publication’s media query at the time of going to print.
