Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality conducted a public consultation programme on the proposed geographic name-change for Nebo.
Council Speaker Judy Mphelane-Nkgadima led the public participation initiative at the Phokwane Community Hall in Ward 3 on 16 May.
The proposed geographical name-change follows Mr. Phatudi Robert Matlala’s, in his capacity as the local traditional council secretary, filling of an application in November 2024 on behalf of the Phokwane Traditional Authority and the community to rename Nebo, Native Employment Bureau Office, to Phokwane in order to remove the considered humiliating and derogatory name.
Thomas Mashabela, MLM spokesperson, informed that the applicant filled another application earlier this year, following the possibility that Phokwane might not be approved by the standardizing naming system, given that it is used more than twice in the country.
Mashabela said the applicant proposed renaming Nebo are as Lefakong, after the mountain at which Kgoshi Phokwane I settled.
“The public meeting was convened to gather feedback from affected communities and traditional leaders on the renaming of the area where most government offices are located. All participants welcomed the proposed name, Lefakong, as backed by historical references,” pointed out Mashabela.
Agnes Madiseng, Limpopo Provincial Geographical Names Committee Deputy Chairperson, is expected to process the application together with the community feedback report to the committee.
“The provincial geographic name committee will submit the application to the South African Geographical Names Council for standardization and gazetting, should it get approved,” added Mashabela.
