Communities have been urged to appreciate and preserve wetlands to achieve among others water security.
Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality in Sekhukhune this week hosted the World Wetlands Day in collaboration with national department of forestry, fisheries and the environment as well as the Limpopo environmental affairs department.
Hosted at the Marishane tribal offices under the theme “ Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage “ was used to highlight the importance of wetlands in supporting biodiversity, water security and community livelihoods.
The commemoration was addressed by the Municipality’s Executive Committee member responsible for community services Cllr. Tabane Rankoe, on behalf of the Mayor, Cllr. Merah Mahlase.
The programme brought together community members, stakeholders, and government representatives to raise awareness about protecting and preserving wetlands for future generations.
Rankoe reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community participation in safeguarding natural resources, calling on all residents to actively protect wetlands and embrace practices that ensure their preservation for the benefit of both people and nature.
“Our wetlands are not just water reserves and land—they are the lifeblood of our communities and a treasure of our heritage. It is our duty to protect them for the generations to come,” Rankoe said.
Wetlands across the globe are being disrupted by large scale industrialisation which is associated with pollution.
