The Reporter Newspaper has been vindicated by the latest revelations at the Madlanga Commission which essentially show that the criminal charges against National Police Commissioner Major-General Fannie Masemola were malicious and actually concocted to force him out of office.
When Masemola was charged by the Independent Directorate Against Corruption ( IDAC) allegedly for failure to adhere to provisions of the Public Finance Management Act in the awarding of the multimillion Rand tender to alleged criminal mastermind Vusimuzi Cat Matlala.
Masemola was joined as an accused in the fraud as well as corruption case involving Matlala and others regarded as having played key roles in the procurement process which has come to be questioned and eventually the contract cancelled.
When Masemola was paraded like a hardened criminal at the high court in Pretoria in April, the Reporter Newspaper, in an editorial, did not just question his indictment but boldly warned that it was problematic, particularly the part where he’s paraded alongside individuals who by the state’s own version, are hardened criminals linked to other crimes including murder and drug peddling.
Our argument at the time which we maintain to this that day is that, he, the National Commissioner and more worryingly the office he occupied were being brought into disrepute not because he’s suspected of serious crimes but because of a clear agenda to tarnish his name but in the process that of the office was not to be spared.
Masemola’s appearance in court meant his situation was now untenable and as expected president Cyril Ramaphosa, his hand clearly forced, placed Masemola on suspension.
What was to follow, if there was no Madlanga Commission, was going to be endless delays until Masemola went into pension.
“That was never the real intention. In my view, the intention was, as I say, get him arrested with a spectacle that comes with it, get him charged with a consequence that naturally will follow, which is the minister, and hopefully even he, national commissioner, would say it’s untenable for me to remain in this position while I’m undergoing a criminal trial, and that was its only purpose. That’s what it looks like to me,” said Commissioner Sesi Baloyi with Johnson immediately conceding.
It is now clear that Andrea Johnson along with her cabal, seemingly of Indian men, used the new baby that’s IDAC to pursue a nefarious agenda which appears to have been aimed at benefiting criminal groupings including Johnson herself.
We refer to IDAC as a baby because it’s just 2 years old and should not have been turned into a stage for the kind of nefarious activities that are akin to somewhat of a Hollywood blockbuster.
Having made this observation, the National Director of Public Prosecution should move swiftly to ensure that the charges against Masemola are withdrawn, clearing the way for Ramaphosa to reinstate him as the National Commisioner.
After doing that authorities should proceed to round up Johnson and her entire faction and arrest them in order to redeem the image of our police service.
