The community of Leeuwfontein Township outside Marble Hall within Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality is grappling to come to terms with two separate Gender-Based Violence and Femicide-related gruesome murders that occurred recently within a space of 10 days in the area.
In the first incident which occurred on 9 August, a 43-year-old woman allegedly stabbed her 47-year-old live-in lover to death with a sharp object after they were engaged in a fight at the RDP Section.
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson, said it appeared that the woman grabbed the sharp object during the fight and stabbed the man on the upper body.
Ledwaba stated that police were summoned to the scene and found the victim lying in a pool of blood.
Emergency Medical Services personnel certified the man dead at the scene. “A murder case was opened for further investigation. The suspect was arrested,” Ledwaba said.
The woman, Emily Mahlakudi Mamushi, made her first appearance before the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on 11 August facing a charge of murder.
She reappeared before the Marble Hall Magistrate’s Court on 19 August when she was granted R3000 bail.
In the second incident which occurred on 19 August, also at the RDP Section, a 31-year-old man allegedly stabbed his alleged 23-year-old girlfriend who was four-months pregnant.
Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson, said Marble Hall South African Police Service (SAPS) received information from members of the community about a female who was injured. The police quickly responded to the scene where they found the victim lying in a pool of blood, with several stab wounds.
EMS personnel certified the victim dead at the scene. “Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim was stabbed by her alleged boyfriend, who fled the scene after the incident,” Mashaba explained.
He revealed that the suspect was arrested on 20 August in the early hours of the morning after detectives received information about his hideout in Elandskraal Village.
“During May this year, the suspect was arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm involving the same victim. He made several appearances at the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court. The victim submitted a withdrawal request at the court and he was released in July,” Mashaba informed.
The suspect, who cannot be named before he appears in court, was expected to appear before the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on 21 August facing a charge of murder.
The Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has strongly condemned the ongoing GBVF incidents in the province.
