Five people believed to be Mozambican nationals perished following a horrific accident on the R574 Road between Monsterlus and Tafelkop on Monday, 25 August around midday.
Tshifhiwa Dali, Limpopo Department of Transport and Community MEC’s Media Liaison Officer, said preliminary reports indicate that two sedans, a VW Polo and a Nissan Sentra, collided head-on, resulting in the fatalities and serious injuries suffered by both drivers.
Dali stated that the deceased passengers were travelling in one car. They were three adults, an infant and one child from the neighbouring country.
He said the severely injured drivers were transported to the nearby hospital for medical treatment. Emergency Medical Services swiftly responded to the scene. The recovery process lasted for about four hours.
MEC Violet Mathye expressed sadness following the fatal crash. “On behalf of the department, I wish to convey sincere condolences to the families of those who perished and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” Mathye said.
The MEC further urged drivers to be patient on the roads and drive with caution in order to avoid unnecessary crashes.
Dali indicated that the cause of the accident will be determined once investigations are completed. “The department will continue to update the public on the situation. In the meantime, the priority remains deploying traffic officers as part of visible policing to ensure road safety.
Sekhukhune District Municipality Executive Mayor, Minah Bahula also extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.
“This is a heart-breaking loss for our community. We mourn with the affected families and pray for the swift recovery of the injured. As the district municipality, we remain committed to supporting road safety initiatives and working with law enforcement authorities to prevent such tragedies,” Bahula remarked.
