Leseilane Secondary School were crowned champions of the Magakala Cluster Kay Motsepe Schools Tournament after defeating Motloulela Secondary School 7-6 on penalties in a thrilling final played at Ga-Maroga Primary School in Tubatse on 31 July.
The tournament brought together schools from across the Magakala Cluster, with teams displaying determination, discipline and excellent sportsmanship throughout the competition.
In the first semi-final, Motloulela Secondary School and Kgokodibeng Secondary School played to a goalless draw before Motloulela triumphed 5-4 in the penalty shootout to book their place in the final.
The second semi-final between Dihlabakela Secondary School and Leseilane Secondary School also ended 0-0 after regulation time with Leseilane holding their nerve during the penalty shootout to secure a place in the championship match.
Teachers, learners and local residents created a vibrant atmosphere throughout the tournament, cheering on their teams from the sidelines. The closely contested matches showcased the high standard football within the Magakala Cluster, with all three knockout fixtures requiring penalty shootouts to determine the winners.
The final lived up to expectations as Leseilane Secondary School and Motloulela Secondary School battled to a 1-1 draw in regulation time. The title was eventually decided from the penalty spot, where Lesilane kept their composure to claim a dramatic 7-6 victory to lift the Magakala Cluster Kay Motsepe trophy.
Speaking after the tournament, Molopo Sports Organizer praised the participating schools for their discipline and commitment to school sport.
“Teachers, learners and supporters from the participating schools created an exciting atmosphere throughout the tournament, cheering their teams from the sidelines. The matches were fiercely contested, with solid defensive performances forcing all three knockout fixtures to be decided by penalty shootouts, highlighting the evenly matched competition and the determination displayed by every team,” he said.
Leseilane’s marks a significant achievement for the school and earns them the title of Magakala Cluster Kay Motsepe champions. The tournament also served as an important platform to promote school football, encourage teamwork and identify talented players who will represent the cluster in the next stage of the Kay Motsepe Schools Competition.
