The life of a 22-year-old woman was cut short in an accident which involved two mini trucks transporting farm workers and three vehicles on the D1458 road between Leeuwfontein and Piet Engelbrecht Citrus farm on July 24.
Fourty-five passengers sustained minor injuries and one passenger was seriously injuries at about 6:30 that morning. The name of the deceased was withheld at the time of going to print.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck transporting farm workers from Leeuwfontein was driving at high speed in an attempt to dodge the police after being requested to stop during an operation in the area.
“It is not clear what the driver was running away from. I think there is something wrong with the truck or he could have been transporting undocumented foreign nationals. It is indeed strange for him to decide to drive away when the police stopped him. It is sad that a person died and other are injured from his action,” an eyewitness said.
The accident occurred hard on the heard heels of two other separate fatal crashes on July 18 that claimed lives of 15 people in Sekhukhune District.
The first accident occurred on the R555 between Stoffberg and Roossenekal in the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality.
It involved a VW Polo, minibus and a truck. Five passengers died on the scene. According to authorities, reckless driving could not be ruled out. However, investigations are ongoing.
The other accident occurred on the D4370 between Mogaladi and Phokwane involving a VW Polo and a Toyota Tazz. Preliminary investigations revealed that over speeding is the cause of the accident.
Four passengers from the VW Polo and five from the Toyota Tazz lost their lives instantly. The tenth victim succumbed to injuries in hospital last Monday. Two victims remain in hospital. The ten young men from Mathukuthela and Disenyane villages were buried on Saturday during a mass funeral service held at Makwetle Secondary School.
