Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality Mayor Eddie Maila expressed satisfaction over the work being done to ensure the restoration of operations at Bokoni Platinum Mine, highlighting the mine’s potential to unlock economic opportunities in the sub-region.
Maila held an engagement session with the management on April 21 to get an update since his first visit after the mine’s downscaling of operations.
The mine indicated that it has since made a significant progress towards recovery, guided by a structured plan introduced to restore operations and rebuilt livelihoods.
General Manager Thabo Mokoena outlined the progress made since Maila’s visit to the mine in 2025.
Mokoena highlighted that key components of the recovery plan are being actively executed, with measurable progress recorded, demonstrating a clear follow-through on commitments made to stakeholders.
According to the mine management, the development of a new shaft remains central to the recovery efforts.
The project is progressing well and expected to create employment opportunities for the local communities.
The new shaft will supply ore to the existing process plant, contributing to increased production capacity.
Plans to upscale operation, with a target of increasing output at the process plant to about 120 000 tonnes per month were announced.
This will generate both direct and indirect employment opportunities, including opportunities for local businesses.
In addition to operational developments, the mine informed of the introduction of targeted skills development programmes aimed at equipping workers and community members with alternative and complementary livelihoods.
Maila said the developments signal a positive trajectory following previous setbacks.
“The steps taken to resuscitate Bokoni Platinum Mine and restore operations are commendable. What is particularly important is that the recovery plan presented during a difficult period is now being implemented with visible progress. This gives assurance to our communities that there is commitment to rebuilding livelihoods and strengthening the local economy,” Maila stated.
Maila emphasised on the significance of communities benefiting meaningfully from such projects through employment, skills development and enterprise opportunities.
The mayor committed to supporting the plan to establish a skills development academy in collaboration with the Department of Education to equip locals with vocational, technical and engineering training.
“The municipality remains committed to supporting responsible investment that contributes to job creation, poverty alleviation and inclusive economic growth,” Maila said.
