The Women Combined Movement in Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality embarked on a Safer Roads Prayer initiative ahead of the Easter Weekend on 31 March.
The prayer started at the Groblersdal taxi Rank, proceeded to both ends of the N11 in the area, went to the R579 and the R25 before ending the session on the R33.
SAPS Groblersdal and SAPS Motetema members as well as community members and other organisations, supported the movement led by Chairperson Kgomotso Masina.
Captain (Rev) Batlogeleng Ramatshego, SAPS Sekhukhune District Chaplain, said the aim was to pray against road accidents ahead of the Easter Weekend to attain a safer Easter Season.
The annual programme has been running since 2018. Ramatshego stated that the initiative is inspired by several road accidents that are normally experienced during this period, with increased traffic volumes on roads.
The theme for this year was “Safer Easter Season: Arrive Alive”. Ramatshego expressed, “There has been a lot of accidents on our roads. Looking back, even now, we still receive testimony from motorists including taxi drivers that the prayer plays a vital role in the reduction of road accidents. Our observation, before we can speak about motorists, is that most of the local roads have defects. Our roads have challenges and they need an immediate and permanent intervention.”
The chaplain discouraged motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol and substances.
She urged motorists to take frequent rests during their travels to avoid fatigue. The churches which were involved included the Roman Catholic Church, Dutch Reformed Church, Luthern Church and the Methodist Church.
The group also stopped at the memorial tombstone erected on the R579 to remember the people who lost their lives during the horrific road accident which occurred in 2023 that also involved schoolchildren from Dynamique Private Primary School.
The Fire Department, municipal officials and Broadway Legacy Foundation as well as Groblersdal Taxi Association and Great North Transport also had representation.
