Healer jailed for rape

By Charity Lerato Mampa

The Burgersfort Regional Court sentenced Daniel Masinga (49) of Mashemong
Section on June 15 after finding him guilty of rape.
Court proceedings revealed that Masinga lured the 38-year-old victim to his
residence under the pretext of providing traditional medicine for an ailment. Upon
arriving at the property, the woman found several men consuming alcohol on the
premises.
Evidence presented in court showed that Masinga gave the victim a concoction to
drink, after which she became dizzy and disorientated. He then offered her a place to
rest while she was in a vulnerable state.
The victim later regained consciousness and discovered that she was naked and
had been sexually assaulted. The court further heard that Masinga threatened her
with a firearm and continued to rape her throughout the night.
After being released, the woman managed to seek assistance from a passer-by and
reported the matter to the police.
Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said a rape case was
opened at SAPS Driekop on June 8, 2020. Sergeant Letsatsi Mojalefa of the
Burgersfort Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit led the
investigation and gathered evidence that resulted in the successful prosecution.
Mashaba said Masinga was granted bail in 2020 but later absconded after failing to
appear in court. A warrant for his arrest was subsequently issued.
“He was eventually rearrested in December 2025 and remained in custody until
sentencing,” said Mashaba.
In addition to the eight-year prison sentence, Masinga was declared unfit to possess
a firearm.
