At only 21, Mmakubu Bokamoso Phokwane is steadily rising as a powerful new voice in African traditional gospel, combining strong faith, cultural identity and youthful expression to connect with a new generation of listeners.
Known to her supporters as “Kubuza,” the Dennilton-born singer traces her musical journey back to her early childhood, when her passion for gospel music first became clear.
“I discovered my calling for gospel music when I was still in Grade 4,” she said. “I was always singing at church, at school and even in community choirs.”
Growing up in a Christian household, Phokwane’s environment played a significant role in shaping both her faith and her sound. Her early development was guided by her primary school teacher, Lepogo Lazarus Tjale whose encouragement helped her recognise and nurture her talent.
While building her music career, Phokwane has also remained committed to her education. She is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Education in Languages and Life Orientation at the University of Limpopo, proving that she is as dedicated in the classroom as she is on stage.
Her breakthrough came with the release of her debut single A Bethwe, which earned her the Best Amazing Artist award at the Diamond Gospel Music Awards in Kimberley.
“That moment meant everything to me,” she explained. “Winning an award for my first single gave me confidence and showed me that my music is making an impact.”
She has since continued to grow her catalogue with spiritually driven releases such as Sefapanong and Ha A Retwe. The latter features a collaboration with celebrated gospel musician Tshepiso Mphotle, an experience she describes as both inspiring and educational.
Her music style focuses on making the message of Christianity accessible and relatable, particularly to young people. By blending traditional gospel elements with a modern, vibrant approach, she is able to reach audiences across different backgrounds while maintaining authenticity.
Phokwane’s talent and consistency have already earned her opportunities to perform on notable stages, including the Limpopo Music Experience at Peter Mokaba Stadium, events at Meropa Casino, and performances beyond South Africa’s borders. Each appearance has contributed to her growing confidence and presence in the industry.
Looking ahead, she has clear ambitions for her career and the impact she wants to make.
“I would love to collaborate with artists like Mmatema, Mapula Monyepao and Kgaogelo Kekana,” she said. “More importantly, I want to build my brand to a level where I become a must-have artist on any gospel stage.”
Currently, she is working on her debut EP and preparing for a live recording at the upcoming Wachumlilo Day of Prayer at the State Theatre in Pretoria. The project marks another important chapter in her journey as she continues to grow both spiritually and professionally.
With determination, humility and a powerful voice, Phokwane is positioning herself as one of the next leading figures in African traditional gospel.
